3 Reasons Why Kids Should Learn Coding
Mercy Works is offering an exciting new program to kids in 7th grade or higher called CSD Code. In our increasingly digital world, we want to offer the opportunity to learn computer science, including topics like programming, physical computing, web development, and design.
When most parents pick extracurriculars for their kids, they start with the basics like soccer, swimming, or band practice. So, why coding? While learning to code may be challenging for adults, if kids start coding from an early age, it opens the door to plenty of opportunities later in life.
Here are a few reasons why kids should learn to code early:
1) Coding Teaches Creativity
Coding is like learning a new language – it requires experimenting, messing up, and learning from your mistakes. It gives you the creative outlet to express yourself and come up with new apps, games, websites, and more. Since creativity is encouraged, kids will learn fast and strengthen their brains (Zaionce, 2020).
2) Coding Helps Develop Problem Solving Skills
Just like learning any new skill, learning to code is challenging. Coding requires tackling complex problems by breaking them down into smaller parts. This helps kids understand how to approach challenges using logic and computational thinking. By developing new ways of thinking, coding teaches persistence and problem-solving techniques (Missio, 2015).
3) Coding Opens Career Opportunities
Coding is a vital skill required for many careers, including web designers, software developers, and robotics engineers. People who know how to code have an edge over those who don’t, which offers a much-desired advantage when applying to schools and jobs down the line (Tev, 2020). Coders are in high demand and graduates with Computer Science majors can earn 40% more than the college graduate average (Zaionce, 2020).
Coding teaches our young leaders much-needed life skills to help them in today’s hyper-competitive digital era. Our CSD Code program is designed to inspire students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices. We’re putting the power to be digitally creative in their hands. Give your kids the best chance of success in the future by signing them up today.
CSD Code Program Dates:
