May is National Photography Month: How Photography and Literacy Go Hand in Hand

National Photography Month is celebrated each May to recognize the important role photos play in documenting the history of our society. This month is for everyone who has ever clicked a photo – when we capture a photo, we capture a piece of history that will tell a story for future generations to learn from (National Today, 2023).

We photograph to remember a moment, tell a story, and document history. This connection between photography and storytelling is vital to introduce in a classroom setting for kids to express themselves creatively through both mediums. Here are just a few benefits of teaching kids literacy through photography:

1) Develop vocabulary

Photos capture unique moments, events, or activities and can be a powerful motivator and memory stimulator to retrieve specialized vocabulary contextualized in an event (Ryan, 2016).

2) Learn critical thinking

Most times we just glance over photos, without taking the time to really study them. Since our digital world is becoming more visual by the day, investigating the purpose behind photos will enhance understanding and critical thinking (Kruse, 2020).

3) Communicate more creatively

Simply writing words on a page can be mundane for students. Incorporating photographs into communication and essays adds a layer of personalization and creativity (Kruse, 2020).

Mercy Works’ PAL Project was designed with these benefits in mind. Photography and Literacy (PAL) Project links digital media and creative writing to improve students’ writing and reading skills. By linking literacy with photography, the program provides students with an opportunity for expression through both a visual and narrative connection.

PAL Project is facilitated by Syracuse University for junior high schoolers interested in photography, editing, and writing opportunities that can lead to careers in one of these fields. 20 students graduated from our most recent program on Thursday, April 13. We can’t wait to see what our graduates go on to photograph next!

Missed last semester? No problem! The next PAL Project program is September 14 - November 16, 2023.  Celebrate National Photo Month with us by taking as many photos as possible of the things you love and by signing up for PAL Project through the link below.
