5 Ways to Support Mercy Works on Giving Tuesday

GivingTuesday began as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good and make giving a more central part of everyday life (GivingTuesday, 2022).  In the last decade, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to unleash the power of radical generosity.

GivingTuesday was first created in 2012 by visionaries at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. It always falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving and was intended to be a reaction against the consumerism and self-interest of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While many people already dislike the holiday shopping season, GivingTuesday provides a wholesome and helpful outlet to change the focus to giving instead of spending (Jones, 2022).

In anticipation of this year’s national day of giving, let’s take a look back at the stats sourced from the GivingTuesday 2021 Impact Report:

  • GivingTuesday has officially launched campaigns in 80 countries.

  • Supporters gave an estimated $2.7 billion in the U.S. alone.

  • 35 million people in the U.S. participated—a 9% increase from 2020.

  • Plenty of people participated without donating money—30% of participants donated goods, 50% gave money, and 28% volunteered

So, how can you participate in GivingTuesday?  Here are 5 simple ways to support Mercy Works on GivingTuesday.
